Take Time to Honor a Veteran Any Day of the Year
I was one of many who showed their gratitude for the military service men and women who gave their lives in defense of our freedoms by attending one of the local Memorial Day ceremonies.
As I walked through the cemetery, I found myself pausing at several of the veteran gravesites. They were clearly marked, thanks to the volunteers who placed flags next to their headstones. Ventura County is the final resting place for many men and women who have served in the U.S. military.
At one gravesite, I saw an elderly woman on her knees bent over a veteran’s grave absorbed in thought and the memories of her loved one. She carried a grocery bag with her full of items. It appeared she was going to place flowers on the grave. It was this image I carried away as I departed the ceremony. I wish more Americans would pause from their busy lives to remember those who paid the ultimate price for their service to our nation and the suffering felt by the family members they left behind.
