Change of command brings thoughts of military sacrifice

A change of command ceremony is a formal event conducted by military units for their assigned personnel to signal a shift to new leadership.

I attended the change of command on the USS Carl Vinson last week in San Diego.

The outgoing commanding officer and former E-2C Hawkeye squadron commanding officer, Capt. Karl Thomas, was relieved by Capt. Douglas Verissimo. Rear Adm. James Loeblein, commander of the Carrier Strike Group, was the guest speaker. He talked about the commitment made by the men and women in our armed forces when they joined the military. He reminded the attendees that the men and women standing in ranks were volunteers who wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount up to and including their lives.
